Californians to Tulsa: Remote Workers Share ‘It’s Like Being An Expat’

Cynthia Rollins, who worked from home for a company in San Francisco, was really feeling stuck in her small apartment in 2020. That’s when she heard about Tulsa Remote, a program that gives remote workers $10,000 to move to Tulsa, Oklahoma. Rollins didn’t know anyone there but decided to make the move in November 2020.

Tulsa Remote says most people who join are supposed to stay for just a year, but 88% actually stay longer because they like it so much.

Tawny Ann De La Peña, who used to be a journalist and is now a personal coach, also moved to Tulsa in 2021 through Tulsa Remote. She thinks Tulsa is even cooler than other big cities like New York City and LA where she’s lived before.

A lot of people have been leaving California lately. Between April 2020 and July 2022, 700,000 more people left than moved in.

Rollins is really liking the laid-back lifestyle in Tulsa, with no parking problems and being able to get around the city fast. It’s a big change from the stress of living in San Francisco.

De La Peña is also enjoying Tulsa’s easy-going atmosphere. It’s helping her focus on her coaching business and take breaks when she needs them, unlike her previous hectic life.
